KRUCKEBERG BOTANIC GARDEN HISTORYThe Kruckeberg Botanic Garden was founded in 1958 when Dr. Art Kruckeberg and his wife Mareen moved to a 4-acre farmhouse in Shoreline. Over the ensuing decades they created the Garden, growing nearly every plant from seed or cutting. Art and Mareen took an informal, naturalistic approach to design, combining Northwest native plants with unusual and rarely cultivated species collected from the West coast and around the world. The result is a unique Puget Sound woodland garden

Our club has been humming along nicely with regards to our MANY ACTIVITIES!

MEMBERSHIP: Our main goal this year is to increase membership, and we have established a specific Membership Committee.  In the past 4 months or so, we have approved three new members which brings us to 22 active members—which is equal to our 2017-2018 recent peak of 22 members.  Another goal is strengthening our budget process now that we have funds to budget 

OTHER CLUB GOALS:  100% participation in Rotary Foundation and in Polio.  So far contributions to the Annual Fund are $150 but the Club is committed to achieving an average minimum of  $25 per member.  So our goal is $700 and 100% participation in the Annual Funds.  For Polio, the Club will be matching $25 per person for individual contributions of at least $50.  Our projections, if half the Club participates, will be a total Club Contribution of $800.  As October 24 is Rotary's Eradicate Polio Day, we are participating in the Lake Forest Park’s Eradicate Polio Dinner.  The Dinner is being held at the Lake Forest Park Bar and Grill.  The restaurant will be donating 20% of sales to this worthy cause.

​SERVICE PROJECTS FOR COMMUNITY AND YOUTH :  College scholarships, student of the quarter, PTA support through Bingo Karaoke (One of the attending PTA’s will receive a check for $300), Holiday Baskets (80 food baskets distributed around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter), Lake City Mural Project youth leadership project (see https://enjoylakecity.org/seeking-muralists-for-historic-lake-city-project/) and Scouting. 

BINGO-KARAOKE:  We held a Bingo-Karaoke session on Sept 21 and awarded $300 to Nathan Hale High School.  For the rest of the quarter we will be holding Bingo-Karaoke Sessions on October 26 and Dec 7.
 
NORTH HELPLINE: We did a great thing at our Oct 17 meeting.  We raised $1100 (in record time) to partner with North Helpline and provide 180 Eddie Bauer coats to members of our community.

SPEAKERS: In terms of outreach, we are improving our Website and Facebook pages and have succeeded in improving our speaker series.

AUCTION: Last June, we had a major auction--170 participants.  The  auction raised over $80,000!  Of those proceeds, $12,500 was distributed immediately to our school partners, The Center School, Nathan Hale High School, Olympic Hills and Northgate Grade Schools and Jane Addams Middle School.  An additional $20,125 was raised for our college scholarships, putting the value of our college endowment to in excess of $110,000. 

OTHER FUNDRAISERS: Since June,  We have had two fund raisers—We helped the Jackson Park Men’s Club with a golf tournament that raised $3200 for HAH (formerly Rotary First Harvest now Harvest Against Hunger).  We also had a Martini Party that raised $3000 for the Club. 

INTERNATIONAL: We are providing support to Honduras Solar Project and expect to support the Emerald City Grant associated with branding materials for the RFH conversion to HAH.  We are also expecting to support a Global grant based on our recent district grant -Prosthetic tools for Land Mine victims in Columbia.

MORE INTERNATIONAL: We have submitted a District Grant request for Path From Poverty Kenya Tank Project.  Lake Union Rotary is also a contributor while we are also a contributor to their potential grant concerning Playground Equipment for Disabled Children.  Our goal is to raise $6000 to be used towards the purchase of rain collector catchment tanks that cost about $1500 each.  Safe water via family catchment tanks leads to healthier lives and reduces poverty by providing economic opportunities.  Labor savings from not having to carry water long distances, leads to time spent on tasks that increase family income or health. It also ensures safety, as girls and young women are still being raped and kidnapped along their sometimes-perilous journey to water sources.   To help achieve this goal, the Club is raffling off two tickets to the Paramount’s Fiddler on the Roof Musical.

PARTNERS FOR WORK: Debbie Moore is working with us to find a greeter and on Nov 21, we will be doing mock interviews with her Partners for Work students.

SECRET SAUCE: With all the projects, fundraisers and volunteering we do, you would think we would be exhausted! But with our monthly “Firesides” and regular parties (the “Secret Sauce” our club is famous for) - we tap into the ultimate source of ‘Renewable Energy” - HAVING FUN!

The Prevention Works IN Seattle (W.IN.S) coalition was created as a community outreach program to prevent drug abuse at a crucial age - adolescence. Started by the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Childrens Hospital, it seeks to train parents and develop community volunteers to engage in the fight. ​

Ming Ming Tung-Edelman

A 16yo girl and her family settle in Seattle. She becomes a pharmacist, marries, raises a family, and yet seeks more.... she seeks to help other newly arrived immigrant women become established and successful in Seattle.  Ming Ming founded this new group....the Refugee Artisan Initiative.....and will be showing a clip about  it that was nominated for a regional Emmy Award in 2018.  

Mark Mendez High School student service team inspires friendships, leadership skills, and community pride and awareness while painting murals on vacant walls around Lake City.  
Come this week to hear about the "Lake City Youth Mural Project" in partnership with Lake City 'Young Leaders' program (Lake City Community Center).

Our speaker this week is dedicated to rescuing marginalized and abused young Pakistani women whose families disown them through no fault of their own.  He is a Doctor in Linquistics, speaks several languages, and is a leader in the Church in Pakistan.  His full name remains confidential here on this site for his protection, so come for lunch Thursday to learn his full name and hear his incredible story.

At Rotary, "Fireside" brings us back to our roots.  A Fireside, like a campfire, attracts people to just sit, share laughs and trade stories.  Firesides help build FRIENDSHIPS, the essential clay teams use to sculpt our ROTARY dreams.
