In late May, Seattle NE members visited local Lake City community projects that the Club has supported. The night started with a visit with Gabrielle Abbott (artist) and Mark Mendez (organizer) to view the mural that depicts the history and cultural changes of Lake City. The mural is another addition to the Lake City Murals Project that aims to beautify the community, support local businesses, and uplift and support underserved youth.
After the Mural visit, Club members moved on to get a Refugee Artist Initiative Workspace (RAI). Seattle Rotary NE has been a partner and funder of RAI since its inception. RAI provides a pathway for immigrant and refugee women to become self-supporting. RAI partners with immigrant and refugee women in Lake City to foster an inclusive, prosperous transition to the US through artisan skills training in small-batch manufacturing. We have partnered with RAI to make masks during COVID and now scrubs for front-line workers. We have also contributed to their #StopAsianHate campaign. We presented Founder and Executive Director Ming-Ming Edelman with a check for $2,300. This check brings total Club support for this project to over $15,000.
We ended the evening at the Hellbent Brewing Company with beer and pizza. Some members ordered GateCity IPA, where $1 from every pint goes towards the North Helpline Emergency Services and Food Bank.
